SCH 4U            Unit 2 Science, Technology, Science & the Environment (STSE) Research Project Learning Goal

Students will identify STSE issues associated with the everyday use of organic compounds that are harmful to human health and the environment AND propose a course of action to reduce these impacts.

 Project Overview

Have you ever thought about the impact that everyday organic compounds have on our society

(economy/human health) and/or on the environment?   Have you considered whether solutions exist that can help minimize or eliminate these impacts? In your research project, you will be exploring these questions and sharing your knowledge using a technological tool of your choice!

 Your task:

1)  Choose a topic that is of interest to you; you may use the list below or propose a different topic to your teacher for approval.

2)  Research your topic.  Refer to the following Success Criteria:

●      I can research and analyze the properties of a commonly used organic compound that is considered harmful.

●      I can explain the STSE impacts of creating/using this compound and how they can be mitigated

●      I can concisely present information in appropriate formats (charts, graphs, tables, etc.), using appropriate terminology (Note:  all “rough” work must be submitted)

●      I can research and communicate information, using & properly citing a variety of print and electronic resources

3)  Present your research findings/new understandings using a digital tool of your choice (video, PowerPoint, Prezi, Google Slides presentation, Podcast, Infographic, etc.).

Potential topics:

●      “chemical” vs. “green” pesticide use

●      alternatives to plastic bags (i.e. biodegradable alternatives)

●      hybrid vehicles vs. vehicles with combustion engines

●      alternatives to organic solvents

Refer to the Assessment Rubric as you create your product.
